It’s noisy out there. Jenny–and every solution that looks like Jenny–wants you. They’ve called in big guns this year. And they all want one thing: a contract on your New Year’s Resolution.

But here’s the truth.

Resolutions just don’t work.

Ok. Once in a while they might. But usually they don’t because a resolution is not a plan. It’s an emotional response to a problem that really needs a rational solution. It’s like deciding that you want to see London this year, and then running outside and jumping on the first bus that comes by. You will go on a journey, and if you’re an extremely lucky person, you just might end up in London, eventually, but most likely, you’ll have to try every path you happen upon, and before you know it, you’re out of money, you’ve got a pile of ticket stubs, and you haven’t seen the Palace. Does it remind you of your closet full of gadgets? Anyone still have a Thigh Master gathering dust? Letting the laundry pile up on your treadmill?

On top of that, these resolutions can really make trouble for you. When you fail to achieve them, you feel horrible. Really. You feel worse than before you started, because now, not only are you unhealthy, or overweight, or unorganized, you’re now also a failure!

CoreMatters doesn’t want to have any part in that. We are not looking for the January, or even the February rush. We’re here doing what we’re always doing, helping people reach their goals.

But there is one thing we will do. We will run a special 12-Days-Of-Fitness promotion, just for you. Cost: zero. Benefits: countless. All you have to do is contact us at ourcorematters@gmail.com, give us your email address and phone number, and tell us

what your Resolution is, and then

what your Goal is.

What’s the difference? A resolution is a general idea, say, I want to be healthier in 2012. A goal is I want to lose 20 pounds in 4 weeks.

Once we receive your contact info and resolution, we’ll send you an email message or text message every day for 12 days with a coaching tip designed especially for you.

Why? Because we know how loud the noise is “out there” right now. And we are the voice of reason. If we can help you head in the right direction this year, we’ll feel pretty good about ourselves. And you just might not have that closet full of diet books and ab crunchers come Dec.

You can thank us then.

We’ve all experienced it. It happens. And we’re usually surprised. At first we deny it. But eventually, when we move up to the next jeans size, we see it clearly: we’ve changed. More specifically, our bellies have changed.

Why? Well, it looks like a simple formula, but it’s complicated. It’s basically like this: we get busy. We’re less physically active. But we haven’t changed our diets. We add fat to our bodies. This changes our metabolism. We don’t feel like moving much. So we don’t. And if we still haven’t adjusted our eating habits, we add a bit more fat. And this slows our metabolism. So even if we change our food supply a bit, but we don’t move any more, we need even less fuel, and then we store the rest which changes our metabolism, and….well, you see the formula.

One of the big factors affecting middle-age weight gain is insulin. Insulin is the key that unlocks cell walls to allow glucose (the cell’s energy source) to get in for cell functioning. Its mission is to get the glucose out of your blood stream. When we eat too many carbohydrates, especially the simple ones (the white ones), glucose floods the blood stream, and insulin production spikes. At the same time, your cells only need so much glucose, especially if you’re not making any demands on them. (Sitting in a chair and wiggling your fingers doesn’t count as demand…) So when those insulin levels spike, and keep spiking in a frantic effort to get that sugar into the cells, the liver gets word to start storing these extra sugars for later. How does the liver do that? By converting them to, you guessed it, fat cells. And even worse, those fat cells are loaded with glucose receptors, so they actually attract more glucose than your lean mass cells. And then they get bigger…Meanwhile, your other cells can go “hungry” when cortisol kicks in–I’m getting ahead of things here–which triggers your need to quickly grab some sugary thing for a pick-me-up, which then gets converted to, yes, fat.

If you’re also enjoying peri-menopause or menopause, unfortunately these fat cells are estrogen factories, which will contribute to estrogen-dominance and so many of the symptoms you’re struggling with.

What can you do about that? Let’s talk about fuel first. You’ll need to start making much better food choices.

One of the problem areas is carbohydrates. Carbs are gleaned from many things: vegetables, fruits, and grains. By choosing the ones that are most complex, you can slow down the delivery of this glucose to your blood. That’s what the Glycemic Index is all about. You want to eat foods on the low end of the scale (a GI <55). This means eliminating the refined carbohydrates from your world. Refined carbs are the simple white ones, usually found in our supply chain as barely nutritious grains–white unbleached or bleached flours specifically. These get converted into glucose in absolutely no time, flooding your blood with it, and triggering the response. Try to choose instead whole grains–and mix it up. Wheat isn’t the only grain out there! Keep the grains to a minimum. Eat other carbs instead! Vegetables are best.

Also eat good fats. Anything sourced from a vegetable counts as a good fat. But mix it up! And eat nuts, seeds, avocados. Animal fats are good as long as they are “clean”–sourced from grass-fed animals. These slow down your glucose delivery system also, while delivering important vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Don’t miss Part 2–Toxic Baggage and Stress!

Or Part 3–The Conclusion…

How many times have you tried to fix your knee? Or you back? Or your neck?

How many doctors have you seen? Other providers? Have you tried supplements? Herbs? Vitamins?

It’s not your fault that nothing’s worked. By the time your pain is chronic, your situation is complicated. It won’t respond to a one-time, one-line fix. At least not permanently.

If you haven’t suffered a trauma (ie, crushed a bone, shredded tendons, etc), your pain probably stems from chronic misalignment.

Take your hip joint. It’s designed so that the head of the thigh bone sits full-center in the socket above. If you have become accustomed to a wobble or twist in that area, the joint is no longer in its most efficient load-bearing position, and the weight distribution shifts. This leads to rubbing it in the wrong place which produces inflammation (doctors call that arthritis). Keep using it in that mis-aligned manner, and you’ll be rubbing off synovial membrane. That hurts. Once you work your way through that, you begin working on the cartilage. That hurts even more. But the real pain comes when you get through the last bit of cartilage and wind up bone-on-bone.

Want some good news? It’s reversible! And it’s my specialty. I can return you to a world of chronic alignment!

What’s needed here is to take a look at your body in motion, not on an exam table. You also need an education. And a plan–along with the support it takes to get you back on track. When you’re finished working with us, you’ll take home the tools and the knowledge to thrive in the coming years.

So if you or anyone you know has been suffering or been told they need a replacement part, send them to me for another opinion! Head over to my website.

Contact me. And get relief. Guaranteed.

…tastes just as sweet as before its name change. And is still the same test-tube cocktail it was before the name-change.

The-sweetner-formally-known-as-Aspertame is now called: AminoSweet.

That’s a much better name, wouldn’t you agree? Sounds so–what?–why downright HEALTHY!! Aminos are good for you, right? And if they’re sweet, hey, does it get any better?

Ajinomoto, the maker of Aspertame, hopes you’ll enjoy it even more than before, despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things. Most consumers are oblivious to the fact that Aspartame was invented as a drug but upon discovery of its sweet taste was magically transformed from a drug to a food additive just by switching a few words on the FDA application….

So buyer beware. It’s the same crap in a new dress.

And, buoyed by the success of Canola oil (formerly known as the industrial lubricant, rapeseed oil), we’ve got yet another name change coming, so keep a sharp look-out. High fructose corn syrup is undergoing a makeover as you read this.

What’s next? DDT? You know we still make that and dump it in South America…

boil whatever potatoes you have. (I trim them and cut off any spots, but leave the skins on. I’m lazy, and the skins are nutritious.)

Drain and chill.

Cut them into bite-size pieces.

Toss with: olive oil, sea salt, pepper, balsamic vinegar, a splash of dijon mustard, and chopped raw celery, onion, some chives from the pot on my deck, and any other veg I have. Probably some raw carrots, perhaps some anise bulb. I might even mix in some frozen peas.

Done. Chill. Eat!

The variations are endless. I’ve never made the same one twice. Play around with whatever fresh potatoes you can find: purple, red, golden, white, sweet—all are great.

Brian Wansink, director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Laboratory, has made his career pointing out the mindless (and often mind-blowing) mistakes we make when choosing what, when and how much to eat.

In one of his best-known studies, Wansink gave moviegoers at a Philadelphia theater 14-day-old popcorn instead of a fresh batch (Wansink & Kim 2005). As rated by the participants themselves after the movie, this popcorn was nasty stuff: stale, soggy, verging on disgusting. But did the moviegoers storm the popcorn stand demanding refunds?

No. They ate it.

And if they were given a large container instead of the medium size, they ate 34% more.

The unsuspecting participants made their eating choices based on external cues (container size, the sound of others eating) and the expectation that the popcorn would taste good.

They even ate about 60% as much popcorn as those who received a fresh batch.

It’s another case of mindless eating.

Why do we do it? Wansink says it’s because we’re responding to external cues: our peers, the lighting, the sounds, our history of eating popcorn.

I say it’s because we’re wired to. Our brains are on survival mode, always. If food is available, and we are not paying attention, we will shift into automatic and eat all of it. The brain will revert to primitive mode and remember we didn’t always know where the next meal would come from–or when–and therefore we must eat every bit of the currently available one.

In automatic, we’re not deciding to eat. We’re not choosing our calories or our food source. We’re just eating. Mindlessly. Automatically.

The solution? PAY ATTENTION! Give every mouthful your undivided focus. Align your meal with your goal of good health. If you’re having a treat, DECIDE to do it. And limit it.

And then mindfully thank your self. Believe you are doing the right thing. Belief is the rocket fuel of success!

A drug which the FDA approved more than half a century ago—which doctors have been prescribing for their patients with high-risk pregnancies through compounding pharmacies with great success—was designated by the FDA an “orphan drug.” Now KV Pharmaceutical has been given the exclusive right of production and sale (not to mention drug trial tax breaks!). They immediately raised the price from $10 per dose to $1,500—simply because they could.

The drug is a synthetic form of progesterone given as a weekly injection. The price hike means that the total cost during a pregnancy could be as much as $30,000.

What does that mean for KV Pharmaceutical? You do the math.

What does that mean for pregnant women in need? Again, you do the math.

What does that mean for pregnant women in need without health insurance??????

February is Healthy Heart Month! Right on topic, check out this recently released study using real people–over 300,000 of them:

Research, published in the European Heart Journal, analyzed data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Heart study, and found that people consuming AT LEAST 8 PORTIONS of fruit and vegetables a day have a 22% LOWER RISK OF DYING from ischaemic heart disease (IHD) than those who consuming fewer than three portions a day.
